Quincy seeks greater say in compressor station permitting process
/QUINCY – The city has filed to become a formal party to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission’s permitting process for a proposed natural gas compressor station in North Weymouth, less than a half-mile from Germantown and Quincy Point.
As part of a project spanning three states, Houston-based Spectra Energy is proposing building a 7,700-horsepower gas compressor station on the banks of the Fore River in Weymouth. The site is within a half-mile of more than 950 homes in Weymouth and Quincy.
Compressor stations use gas-fired turbines to keep pipelines pressurized so the gas continues flowing.
Quincy Mayor Thomas Koch announced Tuesday that the city has formally filed to become an intervening party in the regulatory process with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission – a five-member appointed board that makes the final ruling on interstate natural gas pipelines.
